The last thing that Jesus said to His disciples before ascending back to Heaven was that
they should accomplish certain things for His kingdom. Found in Matthew 28, this is known as
The Great Commission. As recorded there, Jesus said:
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you
always, to the very end of the age."
Matt 28:18-20
(NIV)
As Baptists we have long been very adept at making disciples and baptizing them.
However, we often forget the part about “teaching them to obey everything I have commanded.”
We prepare them for life after death; but we haven’t always done a good job of preparing them
for life after birth (the new birth, that is.) As pastor for discipleship and education, that is my
part in the overall mission of FBC Shannon Hills.
I have been a Christian since childhood. I came to a crisis of faith in my late twenties. I
was born again, church attending, heaven bound. . . .and miserable. I knew all about God, but I
had never really experienced the intimacy of knowing God as He would have us know Him.
Through His grace and mercy, I had teachers come into my life who sowed encouragement and
instruction that turned my Christian walk around from playing “church” to being a child of the
king. I learned what it meant to be a disciple rather than a mere convert.
It is my heart’s desire to help others learn who they are in Christ and to walk in His light
everyday of their lives. I can tell you from personal experience, you’ll never know God’s best
until you make the decision to make Him Lord as well as Savior. |
